Historic Ancona

The ancient port of Ancona is the capital of the Le Marche region and a former meeting point for oriental and western cultures. Many historical buildings and monuments bear witness to the past significance of Ancona as a trading port.

On Guasco hill, the oldest part of town, is the medieval cathedral of San Ciriaco which was built between the 11th and 13th centuries in the Romanesque style with Byzantine and Gothic influences. The port area of town with the piazza della repubblica and numerous other historic buildings, palaces and museums is also well worth a visit.
